Using Easiteach Literacy

Easiteach Literacy provides an additional set of tools which are designed specifically to support the teaching of literacy at word, sentence and text level in a whole class or group teaching environment and with both Primary and Secondary age pupils. Many of the tools are also useful on desktop computers and can help with the preparation of literacy teaching materials.

Improve writing with Big Edit
Big EditThe Big Edit tool is designed to help teach pupils about the value of the editing process in improving a piece of text. A text (e.g. a sentence or phrase) is first selected within an Easiteach page. When the Big Edit tool is selected from the literacy toolbar, the selected phrase will appear at the top of the Big Edit window. The phrase can then be repeatedly edited and each edited version can be compared with the original phrase. The final version of the sentence or phrase is then pasted back into the original text.

Literacy content pack
This optional content pack is designed for use with Primary age pupils. The pack contains 85 lessons with materials for each year group from Reception to Year 6 and written by Professor David Wray (Warwick University), Dr Jane Medwell (Warwick University), and Dr Alan Pearce (Huish Episcopi School, Somerset). The pack also contains in excess of 100 text resources from leading publishers, covering the full range of text types as specified by the National Literacy Framework. The texts are all provided in Easiteach format so that they can be used and manipulated by the literacy tools described above.Split Screen

Split Screen mode
This mode can be switched on at any time and enables two pages of a publication to be viewed and worked on at the same time. Text and images can be moved and copied between the pages and this mode can be used to support the modelling of text and text structures.

Word & Sentence Builder Cards
Word BuilderOnce this tool is selected it enables teachers to select cards containing common words and word endings and to place these on the Easiteach screen. As well as providing a range of ready-made cards, teachers can also create their own cards using the screen below. The cards fit together and can be used to build words from their parts or sentences from whole word cards.

Additional literacy tools
Other tools provided with Easiteach Literacy include:

  • Word colour tagging tools that enable different types of words (e.g. verbs) to be colour coded.
  • Word Highlight tools to support choral reading.
  • Word Wallets that provide a temporary word store.
  • Cloze activity generator (simply click on a word to send it to a Word Wallet and replace it with an underline).
  • A timer for whole class activities.
  • Text boxes for the creation of writing frames.
